Abel Assault Results in 22 Month Sentence

BURNS, OR (Released from Harney County District Attorney)-Burns, OR February 14^th, 2022 Jonathon Abel was sentenced to 22 months following a twelve-person jury trial. 

The sentence is based on an assault from January 9, 2021.

On January 9^th, 2021 a good Samaritan called 9-1-1 to report an assault. Multiple Harney County law enforcement agencies responded to the Hines RV & Mobile Home Park.

When law enforcement arrived, they spoke with the victim.  Swelling and bruising around the victim’s eye was noticed immediately.  The victim reported alcohol was being consumed.  The evening progressed and Mr. Abel lashed out, punching the victim in the eye with a closed fist.  The blow was with such force it caused visible injury to the victim. 

Law enforcement made contact with Mr. Abel who was unconscious on the couch in his residence.  When contacted Mr. Abel was impaired and disoriented. 

Harney County District Attorney Ryan Hughes prosecuted the case.  A grand jury indicted on charges of Felony Assault in the Fourth Degree, based on Mr. Abel’s three prior Assault in the Fourth Degree convictions, and Harassment. 

On February 9^th, 2022 at the conclusion of a 1-day jury trial, 12 person Harney County jury found Mr. Abel guilty of both charges.  Abel was sentenced per Oregon sentencing guidelines to 22 months Oregon Department of Corrections to be followed by 24 months post prison supervision.
